Founded in 1955 at the then Florence State Teachers College by an English professor, Julia Neal, and her students, Lights & Shadows has continuously existed and published the poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, fine art, and photography from our campus community, as well as other contributors. Through the decades, the University of North Alabama’s award-winning student-edited literary & arts journal has provided an invaluable opportunity for students to showcase their talent and creativity.

Lights & Shdows has received awards and recognition from The Southern Literary Festival Association, The Associated Collegiate Press, The National Scholastic Press Association, The Society of Collegiate Journalism, and The Communicator Awards.
