Students must be majoring in one of our distinctive scholarship programs. UNA students majoring in Accounting*, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Data Analytics, Information Technology, Engineering, or Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety  are eligible to apply. *The graduate accounting programs have separate eligibility requirements from the Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. Please see below for more information. 

Undergraduate Student Eligibility by Major: 

Accounting:

• First-time Freshman: minimum 3.3 high school GPA and 26 ACT preferred
• Transfer Student: minimum 3.3 undergraduate GPA; junior standing preferred; B or better in AC 291 and AC 292
• Current UNA Student: minimum 3.3 undergraduate GPA; junior standing preferred; B or better in AC 291 and AC 292

Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, and Information Technology:

• First-time Freshman: minimum 3.0 high school GPA OR 24 ACT composite
• Transfer Student: minimum 3.0 GPA in all post-secondary coursework
• Current UNA Student: minimum 3.0 GPA overall; minimum 3.0 in-major GPA

Engineering Technology:

The requirement for students in the Department of Engineering and Industrial Professions is a 3.30 GPA*. Students applying for this program scholarship are also required to have a 25+ on ACT Composite, Math, and Science scores.

*This program is targeting first-time and transfer students; however, if funds are available, sophomore Engineering majors may also qualify.

Occupational Health Science:

• First-time Freshman: minimum 3.0 high school GPA or 25 or higher ACT composite
• Transfer Student: minimum 3.0 GPA in all post-secondary coursework
• Current UNA Student: minimum 3.0 GPA overall

Graduate Student Eligibility by Major: 

MAcc and MBA in Accounting:

• Minimum 3.5 undergraduate GPA
• Undergraduate degree must have been obtained from UNA

All Scholarship of Distinction applicants must be U.S. Citizens.

What if I do not live in the dorm?

If you do not live in the dorm, your scholarship will not include room and board. Based on the scholarship level according to your major, you will still receive the tuition and fees. 

 What qualifications do I have to meet or maintain to keep my scholarship?

Scholarships of Distinction in Accounting:

• BBA in Accounting: Must maintain an overall 3.3 GPA (no major-specific GPA requirement) and must complete at least 30 credit hours of progress toward their degree per academic year.
• Master of Accountancy and MBA in Accounting: Must maintain an overall 3.0 GPA.
• Students falling below any of the above criteria for either accounting degree program will have a one-semester probationary period to get back up to the required standards.
• If a student changes to a major outside of accounting, the Scholarship of Distinction will be discontinued.

Scholarships of Distinction in Computing & Data Analytics, Engineering, or Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety:

• Must maintain a 3.0 overall and in-major GPA and must complete at least 24 credit hours of progress toward their degree per academic year.
• Students falling below any of these criteria will have a one-semester probationary period to get back up to the required standards.
• If a student changes their major to another Scholarship of Distinction major, they retain their scholarship. If a student changes to a major outside of computing, data analytics, or engineering technology, they lose their scholarship. However, students may still be eligible for other UNA scholarships for which they are qualified.

Computing and Data Analytics Scholarship Levels:  

• Purple - up to $13,000/year 
• Gold - up to $11,000/year
• Silver - up to $9,000/year

This application will require a short video and a professional resume.

Scholarship video criteria:

• The video should be 3-4 minutes in length.
• Professional video equipment is not necessary to record your video. The video can be recorded with a smartphone, tablet, webcam, etc. The video will be judged on the quality of the content, not the quality of the video production.
• Save your video using a popular video format (i.e., mov, mp4)

Your video should address the following questions/topics:

• Explain your background/experience with computers, technology, or data analysis.
• Share a couple of personal accomplishments that you are most proud of.
• What are your favorite school subjects? Explain why.
• What major/career would you like to pursue? Explain why.

Recommendation letter criteria:

• A one-page letter is adequate.
• The letter should come from someone that can speak to your academic background and potential. This letter may be from someone such as a high school teacher, high school counselor, college instructor, or academic advisor.
• The letter should address the applicant’s academic background and potential for completing a computing or data analytics degree at the University of North Alabama.

• This is your opportunity to highlight areas beyond your academic work that can show evidence of work ethic, initiative, engagement with industry/community, etc.

• The video should be 2-3 minutes in length.
• Professional video equipment is not necessary to record your video. The video can be recorded with a smartphone, tablet, etc. The video will be judged on the quality of the content, not the quality of the video production.
• Upload your video to a video sharing service (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) and paste a link directly to your video in a Word document or PDF to upload in your application. You cannot upload the video itself directly to the application.
• You (the applicant) must appear in the video; not necessarily for the full 2-3 minutes (although, that is acceptable), but you must make an appearance.

Your video should address the following questions/topics:

• Briefly introduce yourself.
• Share with us why you want to come to UNA.
• Describe which of the three engineering technology options you plan to pursue and why.
• Describe an ideal career for you (job title, company, industry, city/state/country, etc.).
• List and describe the skills (not subjects like "math" and "science") you think are necessary for success as an engineering technology student, and to what degree you possess these skills.
