Cinematic Arts and Theatre Entrance Requirements for Majors and Minors

Prospective students should apply to the University of North Alabama prior to completing entrance requirements for the Cinematic Arts and Theatre program. Apply to the university by visiting the link found here: UNA Application for Admission.

Students who wish to pursue a major or minor in Cinematic Arts and Theatre must complete the brief application and entrance requirements detailed below. To submit your requirements:

  1. Visit, where you will create your Acceptd profile and complete the Cinematic Arts and Theatre application.
  2. Upload your materials in your Acceptd profile
  3. Submit your application.

  • A statement of intent. In up to 500 words, tell us about yourself. Who are you as an artist? Why do you want to pursue a degree in Cinematic Arts and Theatre? Discuss the type of creative work you’re making now and/or what type of work you hope to explore during your study at UNA.
  • An Interview 
Please select a concentration and consider submitting a portfolio, creative writing example, or audition to give us a better understanding of who you are as an artist.

Submit one of the following:

An up to 5-minute showreel or short film. Include a single short film or short clips from multiple video projects. In fewer than 100 words, indicate your role in the production(s).


10 still photographs or illustrations. That conveys your creative voice. The images should tell a story or have a unifying conceptual principle. In fewer than 100 words, describe the theme. 


A creative writing example. Submit either a screenplay or short story (up to 500 words) that will give us some insight into the type of storyteller you are. 

Two memorized and filmed monologues or short scenes no longer than two minutes each.  For scenes, your scene partner should be off-camera. You can film these with a camera, web camera, or phone. Material can be from theatre, film or television.


An up to 5-minute performance reel. Include a single short video or short clips from multiple video projects or theatrical performances. In fewer than 100 words, indicate your role.

A portfolio of creative work. This may include writing, inspiration collages, photographs, and drawings. Show us examples of lighting, design, and tech that you’ve done. Please include both process and finished production shots if available.
