Graduate Assistant

We are now accepting applications for 2024-2025.

Housing & Residence Life provides unique opportunities to graduate assistants pursuing careers in Student Affairs or related fields while gaining day-to-day experience in Higher Education. The Graduate Assistant application process begins at the beginning of spring semester with interviews occurring in late February and early March. 

Areas of Focus

We are seeking candidates that have some experience in Housing & Residence Life or related Student Affairs functions (e.g. student activities, conduct, student government, programming boards, orientation, etc.) and are looking to gain experience in student development, advising, supervision, crisis management, programming, marketing, and business administration. In particular, candidates with bachelor degrees in communication, recreation, marketing, public relations, management, business administration, sociology, education, and organizational leadership will be considered. 

Application Timeline

March 9: Graduate Assistant Application Opens / Applications are submitted online and include a standard application along with a statement of interest. 

March 20 - Until Filled : Graduate Assistant Interviews

Interview preference is given to candidates applying prior to March 20

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrolling full-time in a graduate degree program at University of North Alabama.
  • Good conduct standing with your respective University.
  • Good academic standing- a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 3.0 must be maintained.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding organization skills and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective student and staff relationships
  • Understanding of and commitment to a multicultural/diverse campus community and the development of students.
  • Leadership potential as evidenced by previous leadership experiences, recommendations, and staff evaluations.
  • High level of maturity exhibited in sound judgment, emotional stability, flexibility, and willingness to accept responsibility.
  • Strong interpersonal skills through proven ability to interact effectively with others and as perceived through the interview process.

Compensation

  • Usage of Graduate Assistant On-Campus Apartment/Studio (approximate value of $6,000)
  • Stipend of $7,200 per year (paid in 12 taxed payments of $600 per month, August-July)
  • Tuition Remission up to six hours per semester (12 total per calendar year)
  • Meal Plan or Dining Dollars each semester (as determined by current dining rates)
  • UNA Bookstore Discount (10% off everything but textbooks)
