Fall 2022 CAT Productions Audition Requirements

Please review the following information in order to complete the audition process for the fall 2022 Cinematic Arts & Theatre productions.

The first production of UNA’s fall season will be a devised theatre piece, an original story inspired over a 5-6 week creation process. Our prompt is to craft an original fable or folklore story. Using this as our structure, we will be inspired by moments of local history and look to discover their mystical weave in society today. We will be looking to create a lesson for the world and unearth our own impact on intentional storytelling. This production will have an ensemble of 5-7 performers with individual parts and roles created throughout the process. You, as an ensemble member, will have input in the narrative, research, rehearsal, production design, and performance. We will need artists excited to not just present a cultural experience for our community but also for those hungry to bring their own research, dramaturgy, ideas, and perspectives into this non-traditional way of theatre-making. There are no set requirements for the actors in this cast, and designers or those generally interested in story making are encouraged to audition to create a full collaborative team!

Preparation for auditions: consider discovering a piece of local history you find interesting and can talk about. See below for how to complete an audition online.

This version of A Christmas Carol is not like a traditional script. There are 3 types of roles/characters: the 2 narrators (onstage 100% of the time), Scrooge (onstage 98% of the time), the 4 ghosts (puppets who will be manipulated and played by the same 2-3 people throughout the show, and the ensemble (10 people) who will play all the other roles and will help create the environment/set. There are no set requirements regarding gender of actors.

Preparation for auditions: Read the original text of A Christmas Carol. That is the text of the script.

The following audition requirements are for both The Folklore Project and A Christmas Carol.

  • Fill out the audition information form online. Please be prepared to upload a headshot. If you do not have a professional headshot, it’s ok! Upload a photo of yourself that is cropped to just head and shoulders.
***You will need a resume to link to the form if you are a CAT major. If you create a Google Doc or a sharable Word doc, you will need to set the sharing permissions to "anyone with the link can view.”

  • Submit a 60-90 second self-tape by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23. Find a scene or a story (may be a children’s book or story) that has more than one character. Perform every role in the scene/story in a single take. I am looking for your ability to switch between different characters and making each one unique and identifiable. Focus on changing both vocally and physically for each character.
If you can speak with a British accent, please include a few sentences at the end of your tape speaking with an accent. If you can do more than one type of British accent, please include all. 2-4 sentences in an accent are all that is needed. If you do not know how to do one, no worries! Just don’t include this part.

To submit, you will need to upload the self-tape to either YouTube, Canvas Studio, or any other video site. You will then provide a link to the video on the audition form.

  • Sign up to attend the in-person workshop scheduled for Tuesday, August 23 at 6:00 p.m. in the George Lindsey Theatre. This workshop will focus on physical movement and games, so wear comfortable clothing and shoes that are easy to move in. (Depending on the number of auditionees, there may be two groups. You will be notified if so.)

Call-backs (if needed) will be on Thursday evening, August 25.
