OEHS NIOSH Training Project Grant
Training Project Grant
The University of North Alabama’s Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) option within the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (BSET) is supported by a Training Project Grant (TPG) from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
Through the NIOSH Training Project Grant, UNA helps prepare students for careers protecting the health and safety of workers in a wide range of industries.
Support for OEHS Students
Each year, eligible OEHS students may be selected as NIOSH trainees and receive financial support toward their education. Grant activities also support professional development and educational opportunities that help prepare students for successful careers in occupational and environmental health and safety.
For more information about becoming a NIOSH trainee, contact Dr. Leshan Kimbrough (LKimbrough2@una.edu)
BCSP Qualified Academic Program
The BSET option in Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety is also recognized as a Qualified Academic Program (QAP) by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
Graduates of a BCSP Qualified Academic Program may apply for the Graduate Safety Practitioner® (GSP®) designation. The GSP satisfies the Qualified Credential requirement for the Certified Safety Professional® (CSP®), allowing GSP holders to apply for the CSP once they meet the other requirements.

Preparing the Next Generation of OEHS Professionals
Occupational and environmental health and safety professionals work to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control hazards that can affect workers, workplaces, and communities.
Students in UNA's OEHS concentration develop knowledge and practical skills in areas such as industrial hygiene and exposure assessment, occupational safety, noise and hearing conservation, industrial ventilation, ergonomics, environmental health and safety, and hazard control. Hands-on laboratory experiences, internships, interaction with industry professionals, and applied projects help students connect classroom knowledge with real-world practice.
Careers in OEHS
OEHS professionals work in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, consulting, construction, healthcare, government, energy, and insurance. Career opportunities include Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Engineers, Occupational Health and Safety Engineers, Industrial Hygienist, EHS Specialist, and related positions.
