Department of Music Audition Information for Music Majors and Minors
Prospective students should apply to the University of North Alabama prior to auditioning for the Department of Music. Apply to the university by visiting the link found here: UNA Application for Admission.
Students who wish to pursue major or minor degree programs in music are required to audition in their primary performance areas. Department of Music audition information can be found here.

Audition Requirements
Dear Prospective Lion,
Thank you for your interest in the Brass Studio at the University of North Alabama. In this
packet, you will find information pertaining to the audition requirements for the studio. Students
who wish to pursue major or minor degree programs in music are required to audition on their
primary instrument. An audition application must be submitted to the Department of Music
office to register for an audition. Additional audition information may be obtained by contacting

Brass players are required to prepare the follow materials for their audition:
1) The two brief, contrasting etudes included in this packet.
2) 3 chromatically adjacent major scales and arpeggios. An example of 3 chromatically
adjacent scales would be F, G-flat, and G. Two octave scales are preferred, but not
required.
3) A two-octave chromatic scale (articulation specified in this packet)
4) Sight-reading (provided at audition)
In addition to the performance portion of your audition, you will also be required to take a
Theory Placement Exam. Please don’t worry, this exam will have no bearing on your
acceptance into the program, rather it is used to help us place you into the appropriate music
theory class during your first semester at UNA.
Sight-reading Information
Sight-reading will be selected from the standard etude books. For practice sight-read material
please visit https://www.sightreadingfactory.com/app and begin reading through some of the
etude books. The website https://imslp.org/ has many public domain etude books available for
your instrument.

Music Ed/General Music:
Prospective students should prepare two contrasting works from the Western classical
literature, preferably memorized (although memorization is not required). Movements of larger
works, such as the first movement of a sonata, are allowed. In addition, students should
prepare three major and three harmonic minor scales of their choice in two octaves, hands
together. Students will also be asked to sight-read a short excerpt.
Music Performance:
Students auditioning for the degree in piano performance should present a memorized
program consisting of three or four works from the Western classical literature. Single
movements of larger works are allowed. At least one must be a seventeenth- or eighteenthcentury work (i.e. Baroque/Classical), and another must be an etude or etude-like piece
demonstrating technical facility. In addition, students should be prepared to play any major or
harmonic minor scale in two octaves, hands together, and sight-read a short excerpt.

Voice majors & minors vs. BFA MT Certificate Actor Track
• For all music majors (BA/BS, BS in Education, and BM) and minors: two memorized vocal
solos performed with piano accompaniment (audition pianist provided, or the singer
may bring their own pianist): no tracks or a cappella singing. At least one solo must be
performed in a foreign language (Italian recommended, but French, German, and
Spanish are welcome especially if the singer has experience with these languages). The
second solo can be in English: art song, folk song, musical theatre, jazz, or even
commercial music are acceptable options. The entrance audition will also include eartraining and sight-singing.
• For BFA majors interested in the MT Certificate Actor Track: two memorized, contrasting
32-bar cuts from musical theatre repertoire. Consider contrasting eras (Golden Age and
contemporary), tempi (slow and fast), and/or character. No tracks or a cappella singing;
an audition pianist is provided, if needed, or the singer may bring their own pianist.
