Girl Scout Programs

Our girl scouts STEAM Ahead programs are supported by the UNA Women of Influence

Thanks to the UNA Women of Influence, we are able to offer the programs at no cost to the scouts. The programs are designed to help the scouts get either their Space Science Explorer or Space Science Adventurer badges. 

All supplies and the badges are supplied. each program takes place on a Saturday and takes about 2.5 hours, followed by some independent work at home.

 Daisies Space Science Explorer Badge

The Daisies earn their “Space Science Explorer” badge through exploring several topics.

To accomplish this the Daisies will need to get out under the stars to observe the moon, but we can do most other activities at the UNA Planetarium

  1. Explore the Sun
    1. Solar projectors will be used to allow students to observe sunspots on the Sun, (weather permitting). In the case of poor weather we will use observations from NASA satellites
    2. We will do the “Make a Sun Paper” activity from the Girls STEAM Ahead site.
    3. Make a mobile of stars of different colors, showing them from red to blue (cool to hot).
  2. Observe the Moon
    1. Learn about the phases of the Moon
    2. Use a Oreo cookie to show the phases of the Moon
  3. Meet the Stars
    1. Make a star viewer with images of the various constellations using a cardboard tube and cards they make themselves
    2. Listen to a planetarium constellation presentation to learn about the stories of the constellations, and learn about the phases of the Moon.
    3. Make up their own constellation

Brownies Space Science Adventurer Badge

The Brownies obtain their “Space Science Adventurer” badge by exploring the following topics:

Activities

  1. Meet the neighbors
    1. Make a pocket scale solar system. Developed by NASA
    2. Brownies will explore the sizes of the planets using playdoh
  2. See More than Before. (Requirement 2) done at home using computer software.
  3. Explore the Moon
    1. Use the Girls Steam Ahead activity sheet to learn about the Moon
    2. Use a photo of the moon and cardboard to make their own moon puzzle
  4. Stargazing
    1. Make a planisphere for learning the constellations
  5. Celebrate and Share
    1. Plan a family star party
    2. Make a poster or postcard of the favorite thing learned

Schedule

We will be doing four programs, two each for the Daisies and Brownies.  The first programs are scheduled for February.  Each program is designed for a maximum of 20 scouts.  troops may also book a program on a different date.

Daisies: February 8th, 1 - 4pm

Brownies: February 15th, 1 - 4pm
