Every summer, UNA’s TRIO SSS hosts Summer Bridge, a dynamic program designed to help new students confidently transition from high school to college. Created with the experiences of first-generation students, students with limited income, and students with disabilities in mind, Summer Bridge offers a supportive space to learn, connect, and start strong at UNA.
Through engaging sessions, campus exploration, and community-building activities, students gain insight into college expectations, financial aid, campus resources, and ways to get involved. Participants also connect with fellow students, faculty, and staff while discovering the Shoals and building a strong foundation for their academic journey.
Summer Bridge is more than preparation—it’s a chance to build friendships, find your community, and begin your UNA experience with confidence and support.
TRIO SSS will cover lodging, meals during the program, transportation for all scheduled activities, and all program materials and supplies. Students will not need to pay for program-related activities.

Bear Creek Collaborative is a nonprofit outdoor education center located in Hodges, Alabama. The organization provides environmental and recreational learning experiences for schools, universities, and community groups. Programs at Bear Creek focus on hands-on learning, outdoor recreation, team-building, and opportunities for students to connect with nature outside of a traditional classroom setting.
Students will stay in bunkhouse-style lodging with other Summer Bridge participants. TRIO SSS staff will be present throughout the program. Activities at Bear Creek will focus on team-building, connection, and outdoor experiences designed to help students build relationships and prepare for the transition to college.
TRIO SSS works to make Summer Bridge accessible for all participants. Students with dietary restrictions, allergies, medical needs, or accessibility accommodations should note any needs on the TRIO SSS Summer Bridge application.
Summer Bridge includes a mix of academic workshops, campus resource introductions, team-building activities, and social events. The program is designed to help students build connections, learn strategies for college success, and become more familiar with campus before the semester begins.
Students who have questions about Summer Bridge can contact the TRIO SSS office at 256.765.5168 or trio@una.edu. Staff are happy to help students prepare for the program.
