If you are not a NATS member, but wish to come to participate in the Lecture, Workshop, and Observe the masterclass, please complete the follwing form:
9-10:15 am: Lecture: Introduction to Music Theater Singing. Dr. Manternach will start from the more familiar classical technique and discuss recommended adjustments for musical theater technique drawing upon the most current research.
10:15-10:30 am: Break
10:30-12 pm: Workshop: Musical Theater Pitfalls and Solutions. Dr. Manternach will present vocal exercises to address combine technical issues in musical theater technique; teachers and singers will be encouraged to participate as a group in this portion!
12-1pm: Lunch
1-3:30 pm: Master Class. After a morning discussing and exploring musical theater technique and style, teachers and singers will have the opportunity to utilize these tools in a master class setting. (collaborative pianist provided)

Dr. Brian Manternach’s voice students are actively pursuing performance careers from New York to Los Angeles. They have been cast in professional productions in the USA and abroad in national tours, Equity theaters, cruise lines, and in amusement parks, and they have earned top honors in vocal competitions at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
As a teacher and scholar, Dr. Manternach was the recipient of the 2016 Voice Pedagogy Award from the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Foundation. He has presented original research for national/international conferences for NATS (Las Vegas & Chicago), the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (Seattle), the Voice Foundation Annual Symposium (Philadelphia), and the Pan American Vocology Association Symposium (Toronto & Seattle). He has given additional lectures and workshops for the National Center for Voice and Speech, the University of Utah Voice Disorders Center, the Utah Theatre Association, the Idaho State Thespian Festival, and TEDxSaltLakeCity. He is currently the Utah NATS District Governor, having previously served two terms as president of the Northern Utah NATS chapter.
As an author, he is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Singing, writing and editing “The Independent Teacher” column. He has written more than 50 articles for Classical Singer magazine, currently writing “The Singer’s Library” book review column. He is a contributing author to The Voice Teacher's Cookbook (Ed. Brian Winnie, Meredith Music Publications, 2018) and has written additional articles for the Journal of Voice and the Music Theatre Educators' Alliance Journal.
As a performer, Dr. Manternach’s staged roles range from Tamino in The Magic Flute to Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus to Miles Gloriosus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. He made his European operatic debut as Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail in St. Anton, Austria. For two seasons he served as apprentice-artist at the Skylight Opera Theatre (WI) and has made solo appearances with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Sinfonia Salt Lake, and the Notre Dame Chorale and Chamber Orchestra, among others.
Dr. Manternach is a frequent music director and orchestra conductor for stage productions throughout the Salt Lake Valley, including Aida, Annie, Anything Goes, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Crazy for You, Drowsy Chaperone, Footloose, 42nd Street, Funny Girl, Peter Pan, Once Upon a Mattress, Shrek the Musical, South Pacific, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and West Side Story.
He has taught at every level from middle school through graduate school and is currently an Assistant Professor in the University of Utah’s Department of Theatre. He previously taught studio voice at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University South Bend, and Holy Cross College, and has seven years of high school teaching experience directing choirs, teaching AP Music Theory, and music directing school musicals.
A native of Iowa, Dr. Manternach earned a B.A. in music from St. John’s University/College of St. Benedict in Minnesota, a Master of Music in vocal performance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Doctor of Music degree in Voice Performance and Literature from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He has completed all three levels of training from the CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute at the Shenandoah Conservatory and has additional training under Dr. Ingo Titze at the Summer Vocology Institute.
