GPA Calculations

Quality Points are based on the grade received for each regular course completed. The University of North Alabama converted to the 4.0 grading system in the fall of 1989. At the end of the 1992-93 school year, the records of all students remaining on the 3.0 scale were converted to the 4.0 system.

Grade 4-hr class 3-hr class 2-hr class 1-hr class
A 16.0 12.0 8.0 4.0
B 12.0 9.0 6.0 3.0
C 8.0 6.0 4.0 2.0
D 4.0 3.0 2.0 1.0

Example:

Classes Hours Attempted Grade Earned Quality Points Earned
EN 111 3 B 9.00
MA 110 3 A 12.00
CH 101 / 101L 4 A 12.00
COM 205 3 C 6.00
HI 101 3 B 9.00
= 16 hrs. attempted = 48 quality points

To assist you in understanding how to calculate your GPA, divide your total quality points by the number of hours attempted at UNA.

GPA = (Quality Points Earned) / (Total Hours Attempted)

        = 48 / 16 = 3.00

The student must earn a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (C) on all work attempted at this University and on all work attempted in the major and minor fields (when required).
