Graduation Information

Applying for Graduation  |  Commencement  |  Diplomas 

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!  

Step 1: Check your CAPP Degree Audit and work with your advisor to ensure you are on track to meet all degree and major requirements.
Applicants will receive a formal degree evaluation prior to the close of their graduating term.  Applicants not meeting requirements will be placed on hold.  
Step 2: Apply for graduation by the specified deadline below: (Step-by-Step Instructions)
SPRING 2019: 6-2-2018 thru 10-1-2018 FEE $30
SUMMER 2019: 10-2-2018 thru 2-1-2019 FEE $30
FALL 2018: 2-2-2018 thru 6-1-2018 FEE $30
Application for Spring 2018 is no longer available. 
Step 3: Check your graduation application status and information via your UNA Portal account. The link is in the Graduation area under Academics. You can verify your graduation term, diploma name, and diploma mailing address.  If there are any changes in your graduation information, complete the Graduation Application Change Form.

Step 4: Complete the UNA Graduation Survey by commencement.

Step 5: Review the graduation information listed below.


Spring Commencement will be Saturday, May 12, 2018 and will be held in two separate ceremonies, 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Anderson College of Nursing and Health Professions will participate in the first ceremony at 10:00 a.m. The graduates from the College of Business and the College of Education and Human Sciences will participate in the second ceremony at 2:00 p.m. Both ceremonies will take place in Flowers Hall, and tickets are not required for guest attendance. We welcome family and friends who are unable to attend to join us via webcast ( (available Saturday, May 12th at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM)

*Summer 2018 GraduatesThe University of North Alabama does not have a summer commencement ceremony.  If you are a summer graduate, you may choose to participate in the Fall 2018 commencement ceremony.  Please email no later than November 1st.

I. Schedule of Events

10:00 a.m. Ceremony 1 Begins - College of Arts and Sciences and College of Nursing
1:30 p.m. Candidates for Ceremony 2 line up in Flowers Hall
2:00 p.m. Ceremony 2 Begins - College of Business and College of  Education and Human Sciences

II. Photographs

Photographs will be made of all candidates receiving their diplomas during the presentation of diplomas. At a later date, you should receive a proof and an order form from Images Kept Photography.

III. Announcements

Invitations may be ordered through the University Bookstore, but should be ordered in sufficient time to assure delivery (4-6 weeks before graduation).

IV. Gowns and Attire

Caps, gowns, and hoods may be obtained thee-four weeks in advance at the University Bookstore in The Commons on the ground floor ( It is suggested that women wear dark dresses, no jewelry, and low-heeled dark shoes. Men should wear dark pants and shoes.  **Stoles and/or cap decorations are not permitted.**

V.   Tassels

Baccalaureate degree candidates should wear the tassel on the right side of the cap.  All Master’s degree candidates should wear the tassel on the left side.  During the commencement ceremony, bachelor’s degree candidates will be instructed to move their tassels to the left.

VI.   Undergraduate Honors

Honor Cords for Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude will be available for purchase at rehearsal.  Only those who have met the below requirements, have applied for the current term graduation, and have met all degree requirements will be awarded degrees with honors.

Magna Cum Laude .............................. 3.70-3.89
Summa Cum Laude ............................. 3.90-4.00

*Must have at least 44 semester hours completed in residence at UNA. Students who have received the Second Chance Provision are not eligible to graduate with honors.

VII. Special Assistance

Any student who needs special assistance at commencement due to physical challenges should notify the Office of the Registrar by May 1, 2018. If graduates have family members who need help, please call University Police the day of the event at 256-765-4357.

VIII. Commencement Programs

Commencement programs will be in your seat at the commencement ceremony.  The name you have chosen to be on your diploma will be the name used on all official listings for graduation. This name will be the name printed in the commencement program and the newspaper (the date it is printed is determined by each individual newspaper). If you signed the confidentiality request, your name will not appear on any lists or in the newspaper.

Diploma Information

Diplomas are mailed approximately 4-6 weeks after graduation. If your mailing address has changed since you applied for graduation, please contact the Office of the Registrar prior to April 20, 2018.  In order to receive your diploma, all financial obligations must be cleared through the Business Office.  If you need to request a replacement diploma, please print and submit a Diploma Reorder Form

Please note that only degree information appears on the diploma.  Major, concentration, and minor information is listed on transcripts.
