Una Places Five On All-gsc Team, Fowler Named Coach Of The Year

FLORENCE - The University of North Alabama was well-represented when the 2010-11 All-Gulf South Conference basketball teams were released on Monday. Three players from the UNA men's team and two from the women's team received honors. UNA head women's basketball coach Terry Fowler was also named GSC East Coach of the Year. In his fifth season with the Lions, Fowler guided UNA to a 21-5 regular season, including a 12-0 mark in GSC play. It was the first time in school history the UNA women recorded a perfect conference record. Niala Harris was a first team All-GSC selection for the second straight year. The senior from Chattanooga, Tenn., led the Lions in scoring and rebounding averaging 16 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. She also led the East Division in field goal percentage with a .556 mark for the season. Harris was a five-time GSC East Player of the Week and recorded seven double-doubles on the year. Sanqueeta Meardith also represented UNA by earning second team All-GSC honors. The senior from Shannon, Miss., averaged 11.4 points per game and led the team with 37 steals on the year. On the men's side, Ricky Davison received first team All-GSC honors while Marcus Landry was also selected for the second team. The Lions' Wes Long was also named the GSC East Freshman of the Year. Long a 6-2 forward from Summertown, Tenn., averaged 8.2 points per game. He sank 59 three-point baskets on the year and posted a career-high 32 points during a 90-69 home win over West Alabama. Davison was second in the division in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per game. He earned GSC East Player of the Week honors on Jan. 19 and reached double digits in scoring 23 times on the year. Landry led the team in rebounding with 203 boards for the season. He was also tops in the GSC in field goal percentage, hitting 67.2 percent from the floor. He recorded seven double-doubles and was named GSC East Player of the Week on Feb. 9.
