FLORENCE, AL – High school students from across the region are invited to participate in a unique, immersive music experience that celebrates the iconic Muscle Shoals sound as part of a week-long summer camp June 8-12 at the University of North Alabama.

Open exclusively to students enrolled in grades 9-12 for the 2026-2027 school year, the camp offers participants the rare opportunity to learn directly from musicians, songwriters, and industry professionals who have helped shape and continue to define the world-renowned Muscle Shoals music legacy.

“The camp gives high school students a unique chance to dive into the legendary musical heritage of Muscle Shoals while gaining hands-on experience in songwriting, recording, and performance,” said Janna Malone, Chair of the David and John Briggs Family Department of Entertainment Industry and a Senior Lecturer in the Department.

Throughout the week, campers will engage in hands-on classes led by industry professionals working in the very studios that put Muscle Shoals on the map, alongside faculty from UNA’s School of the Arts, Department of Music, and the Briggs Family Department of Entertainment Industry. Participants will also receive mentorship from acclaimed artists, including multi-Grammy Award winner John Paul White, Single Lock Records recording artist Wanda Wesolowski and Caleb Elliott, along with The Voicealum, Bay Simpson.

The camp’s comprehensive curriculum spans key aspects of the music industry, including songwriting, musical composition, live performance, and business.

A highlight of the experience is the collaborative songwriting and recording project. Upon arrival, campers will be placed into groups and, during the course of the week, will write, produce, and record and original song together. Students will also have the opportunity to perform live on a historic stage that has hosted generations of legendary musicians.

“Guided by the accomplished artists and industry professionals, participants won’t just study music; they’ll experience it first-hand,” said Malone. “The camp is designed to spark creativity, build confidence, and connect students to a legacy that continues to influence the sound of music today.”

In addition to performance and production, campers will explore the rich musical heritage of the region through a guided tour of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

The deadline to apply is June 5, and the camp cost is $250. For more information or to apply, contact the camp at csota@una.eduor call 256-765-4559.
