FLORENCE, AL – The Department of Foreign Languages at the University of North Alabama will celebrate the 10thNational French week through Nov. 10, with a variety of campus-based cultural events, including Croissants with the French Club at noon on the lawn of Wesleyan Hall. The celebration will also include a bit of history in celebration of the French Club’s 100th anniversary on UNA’s campus.
“National French Week is a celebration of the French language, spoken by more than 320 million people around the world,” said Dr. Stephanie Coker, Associate Professor of French. “This year marks our tenth French Week at UNA, and it is time to celebrate the various aspects of French and Francophone, or French-speaking cultures – the food, the music, and the traditions.”
In planning for this year’s French Week, Coker said she uncovered some deep history with UNA and the French Club that dates back to 1925 when the club was established on campus and continues to thrive today. Integrating the special anniversary seemed fitting during National French Week, she said.
“This year, we acknowledge a rich history of the French Club on UNA’s campus,” Dr. Coker said. “In 1925, the French Club established a memorial to the fallen soldiers of World War I, and this marker is still visible today in front of the historic Wesleyan Hall.”
In addition to the commemoration of the French Club and Croissants on Campus, the week of events also includes a French Conversation Table and Francophone music at the French Club’s karaoke event.
