FLORENCE, AL – The Department of Foreign Languages at the University of North Alabama has received a competitive mini grant from the Alabama Humanities Alliance to assist in funding an International Film Festival that will feature films in French, German, and Spanish.

“We are very grateful to the Alabama Humanities Alliance for their support of this project,” said Dr. Alejandra Alvarado-Brizuela, Associate Professor of Spanish. “This International Film Festival is a valuable opportunity for our foreign language students to explore the culture of the languages they study, but also for the UNA and the Shoals communities to participate in this cultural event and see the value in learning a second or third language and become global citizens.”

Since its founding more than 50 years ago, the Alabama Humanities Alliance (AHA) has provided nearly $13 million to support thousands of locally created projects in communities across Alabama. Our fellow AHA grant recipients include historical societies, libraries, museums, universities, arts and literary organizations, chambers of commerce, archives, historical sites, literacy and media groups, and other community-based nonprofits.

“We’re honored to support nonprofits that use the humanities to make Alabama a better place to live,” said Chuck Holmes, AHA’s executive director. “These grants help recipients bring the past to life, highlight our vibrant culture, connect us to each other, and help us better understand this dynamic and complex state we call home.”

The International Film Festival is scheduled to take place in March and is free and open to the public.
