Michelle Eubanks, UNA, at meubanks@una.edu, 256-606-2033 or 256-765-4392 FLORENCE, AL - The University of North Alabama Police and Toby, the department's K-9, are having a pet food drive from Sept. 1-19 on UNA's campus as well as at several locations in the community, including Bentley Chevrolet Cadillac, Martin's Family Clothing Store and the Florence branches of Regions Bank. "This is an effort to the community and engage with students on campus as well as residents throughout the area," said Shequanda Jenkins, a UNA Police Officer and the event organizer. "Our goal is to help build relationships so that we can all make our community a better place." Bomb dog Toby is one of the ways University Police stay connected to students, Jenkins said. "It's hard to see him and not want to love on him," she said. "And students often do, which gives us a way to talk to them. Toby and Officer Kirby will be at the campus pet food collection area." Donations will benefit Toby's friends at Florence-Lauderdale Animal Services, and the goal is to collect 1,000 pounds of dog and cat food as well as 500 pounds of cat litter. Jenkins asked that donations be dye-free, grain-free, and of higher quality. The event will culminate Sept. 19 with a pet adoption day at the UNA Amphitheatre. Pets from Florence-Lauderdale Animal Services will be available for adoption. The event will include opportunities for students and others to sign up to volunteer at the shelter. The Southeastern Search dogs will also be on site for viewing.
