Una To Host Single Reed Weekend Feb. 24 And 25

FLORENCE, Ala. - The University of North Alabama Department of Music and Theatre will host its first Single Reed Weekend Feb. 24 and 25. The weekend will include master classes for high school and college students, as well as concerts open to the public. The weekend will begin Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. with a saxophone solo repertoire master class with guest artist Gilbert Del Bosque, of Austin, Texas. At the same time, UNA assistant professor of music Dr. Yasmin A. Flores will conduct a high school clarinet solo repertoire master class. At 7:30 p.m., Flores and Del Bosque will perform in the Music Building Recital Hall as part of the UNA Guest Artist Recital Series. The recital is free and open to the public. On Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. in the Recital Hall, area band directors and their single-reed students can attend a session on repair tips for clarinet and saxophone. At 1 p.m., the Department of Music and Theatre will conduct auditions for fall 2012, followed by a college-level jazz master class with Del Bosque at 4 p.m. The events will conclude that evening at 7:30 in the Music Building Recital Hall, when area single-reed students perform in the Woodwind Student Recital with the Clarinet Choir and Saxophone Choir, featuring high school students; the UNA Saxophone Choir, featuring Del Bosque; and the UNA Clarinet Quartet, featuring Flores.
