Nominations for Homecoming Awards at the University of North Alabama, and the date for the annual event has been set for Oct. 23-24. It will be UNA’s first Homecoming in Bank Independent Stadium.

Gannon McNees, a sophomore at the University of North Alabama, has won a position with the U.S. Navy Fleet Bands after an audition in Millington, Tenn., where he competed against 44 other tuba players from across the United States. Gannon is the first UNA student to accomplish this role.

Lydia Uptain, a rising senior at the University of North Alabama and a biochemistry and molecular biology major from Muscle Shoals, has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship from the Goldwater Excellence in Education Foundation that supports talented college sophomores and juniors who aspire to become the next generation of researchers in science, engineering, and mathematics. Lydia is also a student in the Delores and Weldon Cole Honors College.

Faculty, staff, and students in the Anderson College of Nursing and Health Professions will have Leo’s Feel Good Fest, a campus and community-wide wellness event, on Thursday, April 9, from 4-7 p.m. in Harrison Hall and Stevens Hall on the University of North Alabama campus.

After a nationwide search for the Director of Bands role at the University of North Alabama, Dr. Joseph Gray has been selected to lead the Marching Pride as well as to serve as an Associate Professor of Music.

The Office of Media and Public Relations at the University of North Alabama has launched a Speakers’ Bureau of faculty experts, representing a wide array of areas of expertise across a variety of fields, in order to share the breadth and depth of knowledge housed in each of UNA’s four academic colleges.

In the 10 years since Light the Fountain was initiated as a spring-time tradition on the University of North Alabama campus, much has changed. The Fountain itself, an iconic and beloved part of Harrison Plaza, has even been rebuilt after its collapse in December of 2019. What has not changed, however, is the excitement and vibrant atmosphere that has come to characterize Alabama’s Best College Block Party® that’s also known as Light the Fountain.

Dr. Michael Pretes, a Geoscience Professor at the University of North Alabama, has been elected an American Association of Geographers (AAG) Fellow, one of the highest distinctions in the field recognizing scholars “who have made significant contributions to advancing geography.”

The University of North Alabama Department of Visual Arts and Design is celebrating the creative legacy and works of Florence native and UNA Alumna Catherine Goode Moeller at the UNA Art Gallery through the month of February. The exhibit, A Life of Soulful Pursuit, consists of Moeller's lifetime works in a selection of drawings, paintings, and sculptures on loan from her family and collectors. These works highlight her ability to capture life's beauty and her interests in the classical figurative tradition.

More than $6 million is headed to the University of North Alabama thanks to the efforts of the congressional delegation in Washington, D.C. Spearheaded by Sen. Katie Britt, $5 million has been allocated to the Joel R. Anderson Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Studies and $1.024 for the Anderson College of Nursing and Health Professions as part of the Congressionally Directed Spending grants.
