FLORENCE, Ala. - The University of North Alabama Percussion Ensemble will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Norton Auditorium on the UNA campus.

The ensemble - directed by Dr. Iain Moyer, with assistant director Mandy Quinn - will perform works by Rouse, Reeves, Piazzolla, Rodis, Tyson and Marino.

"The concert-goer will encounter a wide variety of percussion ensemble music, including a work paying homage to the drumming styles of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham," Moyer explained, "plus another work by tango composer Astor Piazzolla and several other unique pieces."

Members of the Muscle Shoals High School Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Will Campbell, will perform as special guests for the evening.

"One of the great things about coming to a percussion ensemble concert is that it is not only a musical experience, but a visual one, due to the nature of playing percussion instruments," noted Moyer, who serves as UNA's assistant director of bands and also directs the university's drum line and percussion studio. "I think the audience will find the performances to be both enjoyable to listen to and intriguing to watch."

The drum line for the UNA Pride of Dixie Marching Band earned the drum-battle championship during the Percussive Arts Society's International Convention in Indianapolis last November. Next week's percussion concert will feature many of the same students who performed during that championship exhibition.

"The students at UNA are very diverse performers, who are capable of captivating audiences not only on the football field, but also in the concert hall," Moyer observed. "I hope that anyone who comes to the concert will be able to appreciate the depth and proficiency of their musical and technical skills."

Thursday's percussion performance is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the UNA Department of Music and Theatre at 256-765-5122 or visit www.una.edu/music-theatre.
